Designing 21st century nursing education by integrating adaptive learning technologies

This PhD project investigates the impact of the Rhapsode™ Adaptive Learning System on nursing education. The project attempted to improve the quality of instruction and learning outcomes. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, the PhD project evaluates how adaptive learning platforms (ALPs) influence student performance and perceptions in a Danish educational context. The investigation explored Rhapsode from three perspectives: (1) Students’ learning progression with Rhapsode (ie. test scores), (2) Teachers’ pedagogical integration and interactions with Rhapsode, and (3) Designers’ perspective for assessing Rhapsode as an Adaptive Learning Platform.

The study’s research design encompassed both quantitative and qualitative methods collecting data through surveys, interviews, and pre- and post-tests involving control and test groups of nursing students.

The findings suggest nuanced impacts of Rhapsode on student learning. While students did not show significant performance improvements, qualitative data highlighted areas where adaptive learning could enhance teaching practices and student engagement. Limitations were noted in the adoption and consistent use of Rhapsode, impacting the ability to conclusively determine its efficacy.
